oxframe vs OpenMontage

They do different jobs. OpenMontage turns a coding agent into a production studio: research, script, footage, voice, music and editing, composed by Remotion, HyperFrames or FFmpeg. oxframe draws motion graphics from code: diagrams, charts, code, formulas and product explainers that must be exact. Pick OpenMontage for a whole video from a prompt; pick oxframe for the animated parts that you want precise and checked.

Different layers of the same job

OpenMontage is a set of pipelines (explainer, talking head, documentary montage, screen demo, podcast repurpose and more), over a hundred tools and hundreds of skill files that teach a coding agent to produce a video end to end. Its README says you do not need paid API keys: it can use free text-to-speech, archive and stock footage, and adds generated video, voices and music when you give it keys. The final composition is rendered by Remotion, by HyperFrames or by FFmpeg, chosen when the project is proposed.

oxframe sits one layer down. It is the engine that draws the animated graphics: a node tree with layout and signals, rendered natively and the same on every machine, with oxframe check to tell the agent what is wrong in the frames.

Using them together

OpenMontage's render runtimes are fixed in its video_compose tool, so oxframe is not one of them. You can still use both: let an agent write the motion-graphics part in oxframe, run oxframe check, render it with oxframe render, and hand the MP4 to OpenMontage as a clip like any other footage. Note the licenses: OpenMontage is AGPL-3.0, oxframe is MIT or Apache-2.0.

When to pick OpenMontage

  • You want a whole video from one prompt: script, footage, voice, music and edit.
  • The video is mostly footage, avatars or talking heads.
  • You already use Remotion or HyperFrames and want an agent to drive them.

When to pick oxframe

  • The video is motion graphics: diagrams, charts, code, formulas, UI.
  • Frames must be exact and identical on every machine.
  • An agent should check its frames with a structured report.
  • You need MIT or Apache-2.0 rather than AGPL-3.0.

FAQ

Is OpenMontage a renderer?

No. It is a production system for coding agents. Its compositions are rendered by Remotion, HyperFrames or FFmpeg.

Can OpenMontage render with oxframe?

Not directly: its render runtimes are built into its video_compose tool. Render the motion-graphics part with oxframe and give OpenMontage the MP4 as a clip.

Does OpenMontage need paid API keys?

Its README says no: a free stack of open-source voice, archive and stock footage and its renderers makes real videos, and keys for paid providers add more tools. oxframe needs no keys at all.

Which license applies?

OpenMontage is under AGPL-3.0; oxframe is under MIT or Apache-2.0, your choice. Check what AGPL-3.0 means for your use, for example if you offer it as a service.
